From quick sketches to rich, painterly applications, experiment with pastels and become comfortable with this versatile medium. Work from still life, landscape, and a portrait model as you try different papers and methods of application. Model fee included.

Supply List:

List of Materials for First Pastel Class

  • 18” x 24” piece of grey Canson MiTientes pastel paper
  • 18” x 24” piece of white Canson MiTientes pastel paper
  • Pack of three sticks of medium vine charcoal
  • 18” x 24” drawing board padded with 12 sheets of 18” x 24” newsprint drawing paper
  • Clips to hold both padding and your pastel paper
  • 3 sticks of Rembrandt soft pastels: grey, black, and white

Types of Soft Pastels

  • Rembrandt (soft) - Suggested for beginners. Box of 30 half length sticks. (Best to get)
  • Nu Pastel (generally harder than Rembrandt or Winsor Newton).
  • Sennelier - Hand-made French pastels (very soft)
  • Conte Pastels (harder)
  • Schmincke (buttery, soft)
  • Unison (soft)
  • Rowney (soft)
  • Holbein (medium hard)
  • Girault (firm but soft)
  • Great American (soft like Scmincke)
  • Unison (firm but soft)
  • Mount Vision (firm, fairly soft)

Types of Paper, etc.

  • Strathmore "500" series - charcoal paper; 18" x 24"; 100% rag; assorted tints (recommended to start).
  • "Canson MiTientes" - available in various colors (recommended to start).
  • Strathmore "400" series - pastel paper in various subtle shades; 18" x 24" (not recommended).
  • Strathmore printmaking paper
  • D'Arches "Cover" printmaking paper
  • Wallis sanded (No Longer Available!) “Pastel Priemer” is similar
  • Uart sanded paper
  • LaCarte Pastel Board
  • Pastelboard by Ampersand
  • Sabretooth
  • Windberg
  • Art Spectrum Colourfix
  • Schmincke Sannsfix
  • Velour

Fixative

  • Get Krylon - workable.
  • Sennelier makes a non-workable pastel fixative.

Miscellaneous

  • Drawing Board with newspaper for padding recommended. (or just use a pad of newsprint for padding – clip to board – this is easier to do)
  • Medium stiff bristle or nylon brush (in small and larger sizes)
  • Soft brush, such as imitation or real sable, watercolor or makeup brush
  • vinyl eraser
  • Draw with medium vine charcoal and soft charcoal pencil
